Twitter has updated the official iPad app to make a change to the main interface which will be welcomed by many users.

The last major update to Twitter for iiPad has tried to make better use of the larger screen of the iOS device by adding a multi-column view that left the timeline and right the search bar with trending topics.

In the latest update, that's become an optional feature, so users can now fully cover the right column so their focus is focused on the content of their timeline.

In the Twitter app, you can enable the new layout option by going to "Settings and Privacy" and then toggling the "Show search column" switch under the "Display and Sound" preferences.

Turning off the right column returns Twitter to the same interface on iPad as on the iPhone, meaning you have a single timeline with two large unused spaces on either side.

Many users would agree that it is by no means an optimal use of screen space, but at least there is now the option to turn off the trending content if you find it distracting.

Version 8.7.1 of the iOS app's Twitter is rolling out today, and also contains a patch for a bug that meant polling wouldn't appear on the iPhone for users.
